mocfly
Is the easiest way to remove the engine is removing the 6 bolts which attach the mount to the firewall and hang the motor and nosewheel assembly off a enigne hoist?
Arian
Yes it is the easiest. Hang the engine from the small mount in back near the triangular braces and around the base of the gear box. This allows you to change the engine isolators / Silent blocks with ease.
Roger Lee
Hi Chris, Shame on you for not looking in the maint. picture section. You thought I would leave you hang'n? Here you go and see how well balanced the whole assembly is. http://ctflier.com/i...n-engine-hoist/ You can hang the engine a couple of different ways, but using the engine mount can make it hard to swap out the engine mounts because the weight of the engine will put pressure on the mounts and keep you from aligning the holes easily. This way keeps the pressure off the mounts. If you are going to do the hose change it is also easier to pull the muffler off which only takes a couple of minutes. You need to get to the 1 3/4" CEET tube for the heater as well and the oil return hose plus it just makes access easier to other items. I pull it off before removing the engine and after I remount it. It easy.
mocfly
Roger and FD, Thank you for the response. Unfortunately I have to remove the engine in order to replace the stator which had a red wire become disconnected inside the pot. I will post the pictures of this failure for those that are interested. I am gonna video and post on YOUTUBE the removal and re install procedure. It may help someone don the road. As a side note I contacted both Flight Design and Lockwood regarding this issue and have to say I am very impressed with both the rapid response and the willingness to work towards renumeration even though it is way past the warranty. Roger, What is the reason for using the lithium based grease? At 65.00 for a small tube and a one time use it's a bit expensive. It also shows using this grease on the connector pins?, this can't be right? This is shown in the exploded section which outlines the magneto generator parts in the Lockwood catalog. When replacing the stator is are there better clamps to use to min vibration? And is there a better way to route the wires and affix them to the frame, again to guard against vibration? As always my thanks to all that post RELEVANT AND HELPFUL REPLY'S.

Ummm...nothing especially expensive about lithium grease - unless its some kind of special lithium grease. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=lithium+grease
Roger Lee
Hi Chris, Since you have to pull the engine mount off to get to things the method I showed you will keep every thing out of the way and allow good access to the back of the engine. The Lithium grease can be purchased form many places and is dirt cheap. No need to get it from a distributor. Use the factory clamps. This is a more rare occurrence and I doubt would ever happen again. When you are done just make sure the wires that exit the engine get secured so they don't vibrate or bounce around. The grease is to help stop any corrosion.
mocfly
Eddie and Roger, Thanks for the reply. Eddie, You have an open invitation to come and take a look at the plane once the engine is off. Once it goes back together I will make it a point to come over the mountains and visit
FastEddieB
Chris, Driving to Tallahassee for a wedding tomorrow, back on Sunday. Love to have an excuse to go flying when I get back. I'll be in touch!

FastEddieB
Eddie why are you driving? Can't fit the wedding gift in back of the Sky Arrow? Wedding gift was shipped ahead. Sometimes driving is just sufficiently cheaper and easier for everyone concerned. There used to be an airport right by my friend's house - Talahassee Commerial (68J). It closed, and the big airport in Tallahassee is far less convenient. Rather than bother anyone, we would have probably had to rent a car - yet another cost and hassle. And it's not like we don't still enjoy road trips - jump in the little Element and just bop down the road listening to podcasts and music and eating junk! Anyway, back home safe and sound - and thanks for asking!
