FlyingMonkey
Is the head gasket intact all the way around?
Jim Meade
When was your engine built? Can you show a picture of just where the leak presented itself?
procharger
Plane is 2008 there is no head gasket metal to metal design poor design I think.
sandpiper
Not really a poor design. Several Rotax mating surfaces are metal to metal maybe with a light coat of sealant. That's the way the gearbox is done.
procharger
How do you fix it??
FlyingMonkey
Is the head warped, letting a little oil weep out? If so you might be able to machine a couple thousandths off to make it tight again. Or it just might need a better sealant bead. I'm sure Roger will have a better analysis, I'm just throwing out generic ideas.
FredG
Procharger, without photos, it will be very hard to know where the oil is leaking from (even with photos, it can be difficult).
procharger
someone send me there e-mail address I can forward a pic, my computer is not working where can post pictures right now, you will see where the problem is thanks.
procharger
Weeping just a little nothing on mating surfaces I am told there is a tool for lapping the two surfaces back true again, waiting to here from my AP on s solution. He is supposed to call Lockwood.
procharger
If it were up to me I would make a thin copper gasket put that baby back together again. Worked on motorcycles all my life never seen a head without some kind of gasket, cases yes, they don't expand like cylinder heads. Just my 2 cents worth. sandpiper
Does ASB-912-062UL, having to do with cylinder heads leaking oil, apply to your engine? If you don't know, you can check by serial number.
Roger Lee
The head to cyl. mating surface is metal to metal. There are many engines that do this we just don't always see or hear about them. There is hand tool and used with the lapping compound will fix this in short order if the leak is where I understand it. A pic would be nice. You also lap the head and cyl. onto each other at assembly. Most 912's don't leak there so something has happened, but it may be just a simple lap and your done. Your showing your age when you say you have never seen a head without a gasket. Better materials, better machining with tighter tolerances can get away with no gaskets. C ICEY
just a suggestion to watch carefully in the reassembly that the pushrod cover tubes are fully and firmly re-set into the head. If not, the O-rings at the block are at risk of a rather rapid deterioration and failure.

Roger Lee
Hi Ronnie, I got your picture. Your head has a little leak. It just needs to be lapped to re-seal it.
