I see post #12 confirming what I was thinking.  It is necessary to have formulas to design things.  The 'excess thrust' theory serves this purpose.  

 

In reality I question if there is a steady state mechanism to limit the wing's lift to precisely the aircraft's weight.  I suspect there are no actual hard lines and it doesn't matter because the resulting net force is all that matters.

That's kind of my thinking on this.  Lift, drag, thrust, gravity...it's the net of all that that changes things.
