kentuckynet Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Anyone familiar with both the Garmin 796 and the IFly 720? Just cuirous after looking at both of them whats the biggest difference? Either will be my primary GPS hooked into my CT autopilot. I will use a airgizmo mount for either. Both have weather one you pay for and the other you buy an additional unit and get free weather.... But which one is simpliest to use, and fast with gps lock. thanks mack
opticsguy Posted June 21, 2012 Report Posted June 21, 2012 I owned a 700 and traded it in for a 720, and I'm a beta tester for AdventurePilot. The 720 has a bright low-glare screen. I would say that if you're planning on keeping your data current, the iFly will be cheaper (~$80/year for VFR/IFR charts). Truth be told, I pretty much stare at my 720 during flight and use the 496 I have for watching weather.
kentuckynet Posted June 21, 2012 Author Report Posted June 21, 2012 opticsguy, thanks for the reply, can you tell me if the ifly720 lacks anything that is commonly used on the garmin 796 ? If i get the ifly 720 i plan on getting the other unit to get the free weather mack
opticsguy Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 The 796, if it's anything like the 496, will give you terrain and obstacle alerts if the database is correct. XM weather is nice, though you can get an ADS-B receiver to connect with an i720.
