airhound
Any 'Flier' have experience using Hand Held Radio VOR capability? Or-would most just buy less expensive Comm only HHs?
Ed Cesnalis
In the 80s & 90s I navigated with a handheld Icom with VOR. It works, how much longer will VOR be in service?
airhound
NDB and LORAN have been eliminated. Haven't read or heard that VOR is on the chopping block or being reduced. Limited DF Steer, DME, VOR and GPS are VFR 'NAV AID' capabilities. We CTer's mostly have Limited DF Steer and GPS which is occassionally vulnerable, so NAV AID'wise that leaves us with HH VOR. VFR NAV AIDs support/augment basic VFR Planning via Plotter, E6B, current Charts, Nav Logs, and the WWW. Just have to be careful to remain proficient with basic pilotage and be ready for the electrons to stop AIDing.
