That wouldn't be bad if you were using oil for cars and needed an additive package, but your good full or semi synthetic motorcycle oil with its additives does all the same things. If any thing happens to your engine Rotax will not help you in any way if you use it.

Motorcycle oils are different from auto oils. They have an additive package because our oil is shared between the engine and gearbox. Auto oils don't have these additives and especially the additive we need, ZDDP.

Zinc dithiophosphate lubes our gear box but its not a more is better additive, more is worse or less effective. You can't use this in automotive oil because of the catalytic converter so we are already paying for the additive once by buying motorcycle oil.

Hi Rich,

Their oils do not have our additive package so it may help them.

Hi Ed,

You must have enough ZDDP to be effective. Too little usually below 1200 ppm doesn't help the way it should. It is basically a zinc additive that adheres to our metals to provide a sacrificial metallic surface to keep our gears or metals from directly rubbing. From what I have been able to gather concentrations of 1800 and as high as 2100 ppm seem to be the best. I know AmsOil is around 1400 and many are in the 1400-1800 range. Aero Shell Sport Plus 4 increased their's this last year. You are right that it is a catalytic killer. It coats the material inside them. You need ZDDP for older cars with flat tappet lifters like the Rotax has or where you share the engine oil and gearbox oil. Without it you have no protection. Now you know why Rotax does not recommend an auto oil because it lacks the additives. Auto oil can be used in a pinch, but should be changed at your earliest convenience.
