mocfly Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 I came across these pics of my very first GPS. A Christmas present from my children so i wouldn't get lost. Seems like a lifetime ago.
FlyingMonkey Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 My first aviation GPS was an AnywhereMap ATC. Great idea, poor execution. I'd rather forget it.
CT4ME Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 Magellan 2000... Then a Garmin GPS II. No real map, just coordinates. Then upgraded to a "mapping" product, the Garmin eMap. tim
Tom Baker Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 The first for me was a Garmin 90 bought at Sun'nFun 1995. I used it on my trip home, and never looked back.
Runtoeat Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 I've still got my Nokia bag cell phone gathering dust under my workbench. Needed a huge 12v. battery and probably weighed 5 pounds. It was so cool to have a phone in the car because the cars I drove in those days weren't worth as much as the phone and there was always the chance of breaking down and being left stranded. The GPS and cell phones have transformed mankind. Gotta believe that there'll come the day when we'll just go the to "Transporter Room" and "get beamed up"!
Ed Cesnalis Posted April 1, 2014 Report Posted April 1, 2014 My first GPS was panel mounted in my Skyhawk. It displayed both bearing and track in degrees. Make those 2 numbers match and no more zig-zaging via VORs

sandpiper Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 I think my first GPS was a panel slip in that replaced a LORAN. I think both were Apollo brands. Didn't Apollo get merged into Garmin? My first moving map GPS was a Garmin 196.
Tunny Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Apollo was the brand name of Oregon Aviation Technology Company, II Morrow, which was acquired by UPS in 1986. Yes the same company that drives the brown trucks. Then UPS sold the company to Garmin. Had a II Morrow Apollo 612B Loran Navigator, which was one of the best, GA Loran units, at the time. Good accuracy, just not great accuracy. Today the iPhone has much better capabilities. My how times have changed.
FlyingMonkey Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Like this?
Doug G. Posted April 2, 2014 Report Posted April 2, 2014 Pay no attention to the man beside the console!
FastEddieB Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 Pretty sure mine was a Garmin 95XL as well. Look up coordinates and navigate to any point on the planet! A pilot's dream come true!!!
coppercity Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 Like this? I like the steering wheel, does that control the cursor?
FlyingMonkey Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 I like the steering wheel, does that control the cursor? No, you spin that to make it compute stuff...hamsters are too expensive.
Anticept Posted April 3, 2014 Report Posted April 3, 2014 No, you spin that to make it compute stuff...hamsters are too expensive. Use chinese hamsters. They work for a fraction of the food.
