coppercity Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Lucky Cubs! http://www.flyingmag.com/technique/weather/video-extremely-strong-winds-force-super-cubs-air?src=SOC&dom=fb
FlyingMonkey Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Crikey! Pretty good job by those pilots getting those Cubs in the air so they wouldn't get smashed to pieces.
CT4ME Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Regardless... pretty freaky. Those type of things, and big ol' Dust Devils, are Nature's way of reminding you who's Boss.
Ed Cesnalis Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 This is not a microburst. Its an outflow boundary gust front resulting in that crazy wind shear pushing and twisting them violently on the ground. An outflow boundary, also known as a gust front creates low-level wind shear. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outflow_boundary. Agree
GravityKnight Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 This is just a couple miles from where I fly out of. Being up against the mountains causes some weird stuff. Call the automated on the way to the airport: 7 knots of wind... sweet... call the automated 3 min later: gusting 37 knots from a different direction.... Couple that with 10k+ DA in the summer and it's never dull around here. Can't even rent the CH750 right now, they won't let anyone during the hot part of the year, it's so under powered with an 0-200. And the CTSW had a prop strike incident so it's down .. again.... Anyway, pretty wild video, glad someone caught it on cam... thanks for posting!
FlyingMonkey Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 And the CTSW had a prop strike incident so it's down .. again.... Huh? What this time?!?
GravityKnight Posted July 23, 2014 Report Posted July 23, 2014 Huh? What this time?!? Someone put too much left aileron in it, just after touching down (landed kind of flat I guess) ....the prop can touch the runway if you tip it up on the front/1 main far enough apparently.. I mean that is obvious but... seems to me you would need to tip it up pretty far, thinking this would look rather odd going down the runway.. So they had to send the gear drive off etc. The owner emailed me and said they are probably trading it... for another LS. I wish they wouldn't, this thing out climbs the the other LS's... but the bad luck has been running strong lately. Not sure of the exact reasons for him wanting to sell it though. I listed my truck today... if it sells, I will be plane shopping fairly soon. Be so glad to get away from all the nonsense related to renting. Of course... I won't be rocking anything as nice as a CT anymore lol
Anticept Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 If your truck fetches a good penny, get a bank loan and buy the sw. Good thing is the slipper clutch will save the engine 99% of the time. We had a prop strike, so they took off the gearbox, did a quick inspection, and put it back on with new prop, no problem!
FastEddieB Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 I had guessed a flat/fast landing was the proximate cause, It usually is.
N89WD Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 I'll be selling my SW for a C4. If timing works out for ya....we'll see
CT4ME Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 I wouldn't hold my breath... the Aviation subcommittee was told today the Part 23 rewrite is already projected to be at least 2 years behind schedule. That can't help but make FD furious.

It's worth about 23k (Duramax I did quite a bit of custom work too, borg warner s366 turbo sitting sideways on top of the engine, some tranny work, water inj, suspension, tuning etc. makes ~ 650hp+) Not worth a ton, but that money pays off my little house, and that opens the door to borrowing some money. Though I will/can probably only borrow about 45k. So my options are limited. My eye is on a kitfox, I want a series 5 or newer (built for 1550 gross), tricycle gear, with a 912 or comparable. Saw a few of these (tail draggers) on barnstormers yesterday in the 35-36k range.. that would leave enough to build a hanger too! That is a large benefit to a non-direct drive prop... don't have to pull the engine and go through it!! From what I'm hearing it shouldn't be down long this time, so it must not have damaged too much beyond on the prop.
Anticept Posted July 24, 2014 Report Posted July 24, 2014 It's worth about 23k If you throw 20k at a bank, they will be VERY interested in doing an airplane loan with you.
AZAV8OR Posted July 25, 2014 Report Posted July 25, 2014 I'd bet that the guy flying the downwind "departure" needed a change of briefs! ????
