NC Bill Posted September 12, 2014 Report Posted September 12, 2014 My chute arrived in St. Paul on Tuesday and was shipped out Thursday (yesterday). No warranty expressed or implied, your mileage may vary...yada...yada...
207WF Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 Just finished my chute repack. The whole thing was 4 weeks and 1,505.00 all in. Along the way, my local shop discovered that the chute had not been installed correctly. The nylock screws that hold the rocket in its canister had never been tightened, and the rocket was rattling around, scoring itself and the canister. Luckily the BRS guy was in town and could fix it. My shop suggests that if anyone has a CT sold by the Dunhams and serviced by GFA south of Reno (Ed?) it might be worth making sure that your rocket is screwed in. Mine would not have worked had I needed it. WF
sandpiper Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 Did BRS raise their price? A year ago the price was about $850 which included return freight. It cost about $50 to send it to BRS so does that mean your shop charged you $605 for R&R? Seems a little high??

NC Bill Posted September 19, 2014 Author Report Posted September 19, 2014 BRS has raised their price to $975 includes ground return shipping.
FastEddieB Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 If it's any consolation, Cirrus repacks start at $10k and can run up to $15k for those who need to upgrade to the new electronic igniter models.
Doug G. Posted September 20, 2014 Report Posted September 20, 2014 Well, there you go...look at all the money we are saving. It is like going to Harbor Freight.
sandpiper Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 And, Harbor Freight has cheap replacement policies. If your new HF prize doesn't work, bring it back for a new one. Wonder how that would work if the got into the BRS business??

rdeurloo Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 $975 to repack a chute. No wonder there a lot fewer pilots than there use to be.
FastEddieB Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 Repack, or repack and replace rocket motor? I know it's way up there I believe it's a repack with a new rocket and reef cutters. Earlier models need composite work, and most of the fleet will have to upgrade to the new electronic igniters, since the old mechanical ones are not made anymore. Lots of grumbling about gouging on the COPA site. Cirrus has a monopoly, and eliminating the chute is not an option.
FlyingMonkey Posted September 22, 2014 Report Posted September 22, 2014 The price is what it is, but a 15% increase all at once stings a little. Might be easier to take if they just bumped the price 3-5% every year. You know, warm that frog a little before boiling...
NC Bill Posted September 22, 2014 Author Report Posted September 22, 2014 BRS couldn't explain why the CT chute needs to be repacked every 6 years while the CIRRUS every 10 years.
207WF Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 The BRS repack alone was 1,080, but that included extra for "fast" shipping. I think the BRS guy dropped by my local shop and fixed the rocket for free, since I paid the 1,080 before we found the problem with the rocket. Local shop time was the rest, which included lots of time tracing these things down. BRS had to be contacted several times, forgot to send documentation more than once, etc. But, hopefully now it will work if I need it! WF
Anticept Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 By the way, BRS will send instructions to your local parachute repacker (who has a round parachute rating). Our parachutes are softpack type placed inside a case for protection, so they are similar to backpack chutes.

That could save some money...assuming the packing is the same quality.
Anticept Posted September 23, 2014 Report Posted September 23, 2014 Just like pilots, repackers have to perform a number of repacks and demonstrate it to an examiner to get their rating. BRS fully supports repacking their softpacks by independent repackers.
