gbigs
The FAA today published its final rule for the commercial use of small drones under 55 pounds. Drones are still restricted to 400 feet agl. Amazon says they can't go forward with the rule as written. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/FAA-Releases-Commercial-Drone-Rule-226436-1.html
Doug G.
Just be aware that these are for commercial use, there are rules for non commercial also which includes registration. It remains to be seen how well they are followed and how they will be enforced.
SportFlyer1
I can assure you the recreational rules will be poorly followed, and they will be enforced with great vigor by every local sheriff.

The folks who have been involved in R/C airplanes as a hobby generally belong to a local club and fly at a designated field. It is the others that Wil be the issue. Cluemeister
They eliminated the requirement to get a SP certificate with this change, correct?
Doug G.
There is an FAA aeronautical knowledge test that must be taken and passed, but no SP certificate. (That was never a requirement, although those things were talked about at one point.)
Anticept
A pilot's license was required to operate the UAS. It is written in the 333 exemptions that were handed out.
Doug G.
Anticept is right. I didn't know it was required, but I just talked to my nephew who flies a drone commercially and he verified it. He got his PPL last November, but I don't think he regrets it. He enjoys flying.
Cluemeister
I trained at the same time as a commercial drone guy, and it was clear he was there to keep operating his drone business.
Doug G.
There have been a number of drone operators doing ground school type stuff at the flight school I trained at in the past few months.
