bmar
Is it possible or even easy to add a turbo to the 912 for those of us in the mountain west. Or at overhaul can you drop in a 914T replacement into the CTLS legally? Thanks!
FlyingMonkey
You could do it on an E-LSA, but you'd have to coordinate with the FSDO and do phase I flight testing to make sure you didn't exceed LSA performance limits. You'd probably have to pitch the prop *very* flat and/or limit RPM to keep it legal, and have those parameters spelled out as operating limitations. WmInce
Would probably be about a 15-20% boost in hp at standard atmospheric conditions. Would the stock rods, crank, pistons and gearbox handle that?
Roger Lee
Hi bmra, Not feasible. It would take a firewall forward reconstruction and cowl mod. and I still don't think it would fit well.
Cluemeister
That would be a great upgrade for the CT.
Tom Baker
A turbo kit has been done before. I think they also added an adjustable prop, with the control located so it couldn't be adjusted in flight.
Roger Lee
It's a major undertaking. I don't think it would be worth the $40K price tag. $29K for the engine and another $8-$10K for all the mods and engineering.
FlyingMonkey
A cheaper option would be a big bore kit from Zipper. GravityKnight has been using one at higher elevations and has good things to say.
Tom Baker
It was my understanding that they modified the original 912ULS.
Roger Lee
I know of two CT's that have had the big bore kit and one of them with a FI kit. Several of the big bore kits have had issues and all the bugs may not be fully worked out yet. Once you do anything to this engine you own it and will never get help from Rotax for anything. Adam
If you want a turbo and wish to stay in an LSA category the Tecnam Astore and P2008 are both available with a Rotax 914 (Turbo)
SportFlyer1
Pretty plane, but it makes you wonder. If they can cram a 914 in it, then its speed will be boosted to the top of the LSA category. Which is to say it was a little slow before. The CT can be coaxed to the top speed with a 912 on board. Of course if you want to really go fast, an Arion Lightning with the Jabiru 3300 six cylinder can take you over the 120 knot limit, since they derate the engine for cruise. But I don't see turbo's as the current answer.
