I got a look at the Sierra from above most of the wildfire smoke.  I climbed to 17,000 and had plenty left to go higher.   TAS was 117kts when I went level. The Bing carbs worked perfectly.

When you go this high ED resetting the prop pitch is best. If you are going to 18K then getting 5500 rpm WOT is still important. No matter what climb will be slow at best.

In the early years I would reset twice / year.  I always optimized for best speed at a high (above 10,000) altitude.  To change for a single flight doesn't make sense to me in fact now I use a single setting year round.  Without the summertime adjustment I give up 3-4 knots.

My best speeds ever during the year are 127kts TAS and worst speeds are 119kts TAS.

Did you ever resolve your high oil temps in the climb Ed?

No, I would still like the higher capacity cooler. I have learned to live with higher climb temps.

Ed, looks like evidence of water on Mars?    This is a stunningly beautiful picture.  Are there ever any people up in these locations?

It looks like there is a building or tent on top of the peak to the right.

Did you buzz them?   :)

I stuck out like a sore thumb.  I made sure to keep my 500' and was their 'air show' for 5 minutes with 2 close passes.

Here's a couple from the front side.
