Rotax Training

We just attended the Sebring Expo and the most misunderstood issue among the LSA professionals is Rotax maintenance and service requirements. First on an SLSA you can not take the rotax course and perform maintenance on a rotax on an SLSA, without an LSRM or an A & P. Additionally, if you are a qualified mechanic, the initial training does not have to be factory training. You just must have had training. And finally, while Rotax has a 2 year renewal policy, this is just that a rotax policy. The only requirement in the FARs is for initial training.

You can take the Rotax service course as an owner and perform routine service items- such as oil changes. But the line maintenance items still require an A & P or LSRM.

This is SLSA only - not ELSA

This is all true, but the caveat here is that if you don't have a Rotax trained mechanic work on your Rotax engine you will forfeit any warranty, you will not get paid for and warranty work and Rotax will not sell you parts at a discount or recognize you on any forum or list they sponsor. What FAA did is throw all the liability and any civil lawsuit right on top of the poor unsuspecting A&P. FAA admits this is a poor idea, but legally they are stuck with this decision. FAA knows untrained and under educated mechanics have caused many Rotax issues, now it's up to the A&P to watch his own butt instead of someone looking out for him. This issue has been decided and it's a done deal, but don't look to see it come out in writing anytime soon and maybe never.

Let's take this one more step. Doesn't the CT maintenance manual defer to rotax for the engine part? Don't they say as per Rotax, etc, etc?? Or words to that effect.

If so, then how can you legally work on a Rotax in a CT without the Rotax training AND the 2 year renewal?

Hi John,

Partly because FD can't give away certain rights and they can't take them away either. FD says in the inspection pages that an owner can do the engine on the maint check list, but they really can't give an owner the right to do an inspection that FAA says needs a certified mechanic. They can't give the entire inspection away to the owner against the SLSA FAA rules. On the other hand Rotax can't stop someone doing preventative maint as listed in the FAR's. So you can do preventive maint as per the FAA, but can't do the rest of the inspection as the inspection page from FD suggest. Just like GA, you just have to know the rules and when you see something even though it is in writing you need to know if it really means what it says. FD does say follow the Rotax manual, but the FAA says you can't force them to comply with Rotax made up rules.

Fun Huh!

Actually I don't see where the confusion is, but that's most likely because I have read and spent a lot of time on the rules.

The grass is always greener or more brown depending on where and when you look at the other guy. The glass should always be half full and never half empty. There are always silver linings, you just have to open your eyes wide enough to see them and not turn away in anger or despair. wink.gif

Do you (or does anyone) have any information on an A&P who lost his license, and was fined (in Texas) for not having Rotax training?
