GrassStripFlyBoy
I bought a Curtis quick change valve and have yet to install it, I was not impressed with the polymer gasket that it came with and sort of parked the plan. I'm thinking I'd install with a standard Rotax crush gasket - any issues in doing so?
Roger Lee
Don't install it at all. The drain rate is so slow you get a really poor flush on the tank and its contaminants. Plus the new Rotax tank bottom insert was redesigned and it won't allow the valve to fully seat without hitting the bottom of the pan without and extension. GrassStripFlyBoy
That settles it and I'm with you, between dealing the mag plug and such, one more safety wire job is not really a burden. Thanks

Tom Baker
Most oil changes I do anymore I just pull the tank and clean it. Granted most are on airplanes where I'm doing a condition inspection.
Animosity2k
I've yet to do an oil change myself, are they that involved? I get charged $260 for them on my field, seems excessive!
Tom Baker
That seems excessive to me as well. What is their shop rate?
FlyingMonkey
Yeah an oil change is less than an hour in a CT. Anything more than $80 + oil & filter is too much.
procharger
You my friend are getting screwed big time, do it yourself it's not hard.
Warmi
That’s the problem with small service requests like that ... a lot of places won’t bother at all or will charge standard minimum fee ( explicitly or implicitly ) Changing oil is pretty trivial so I would suggest just learn how to do it ... AGLyme
The great Roger Lee taught me how to do it... if I can do it, anyone can. However, the Rotax isn’t a tractor, there are multiple steps involved. I took a bunch of pics of each step... I’ll try to dig up the steps... and post. AGLyme
I took decent Notes, I hope I have all the steps, if not, there is always the parachute. And buy the Roger Lee oil filter wrench... ps, I loaded a “pages” file, Apple’s Microsoft word... I hope the page just opens inside the forum post instead of a download... 912 Oil Change Steps.pages
AGLyme
Looks like a download only I’m sorry... if anyone knows how to convert “pages” to a pdf (or photo) and then post I’d appreciate it... I never said I was smart... just good looking.
Warmi
It downloads as a pdf file anyway ... at least on iOS.
AGLyme
I wish I could post as a pic... I have an ipad for Foreflight and weather... I took it on my trip out to Tuscon when I went to Roger's class and took notes on the flight back. My office is Windows... I tried to convert to Windows and then to a PDF or a pic -- for posting but to no avail... I am glad it is a pdf Warmi... I hope it all makes sense. The point is... a 912 oil change is kinda straight forward, but it involves more than just a plug, oil and a funnel... there are many steps to take, including torquing and wiring... and prop turning... the steps are critical. Animosity2k
Can anyone get the file converted to a pdf or .doc? I cannot get it to open.
Mike Koerner
Animosity, The .pages file extension is an Apple format. Here's the low-down on how to convert it for use on other machines. I've attached the same file with a .zip extension which I think you will be able to open. AGLyme
Sorry about the hassle... I’m not good at the Apple/microsoft transition.
procharger
Drain oil replace filter drain bolt washer, pull 4 plugs add proper amount of oil turn prop until you see oil pressure install plugs fire it up check oil go flying. Safety wire drain bolt.
EB3
Regarding an oil change, the only step I see missing is where you find some way - despite your best intentions and safeguards - to spill at least half of the old oil onto the floor of your hangar. That step is in the instructional guide I use, and I follow it religiously!
Animosity2k
I'm confused the oil is poured into the filter? How do you fit it all in there?

You use dehydrated oil and then it swells back up as it sits in the engine.
Tom Baker
Just enough oil to fill the filter is poured into the filter, the rest is poured into the oil tank.

You can't make these jokes with me I take things to seriously ha. I started trying to find out why I bought a case of Aeroshell instead of Dehydrated Oil lol.
