robjahnke
Does anyone know why the cabin heat tube from the muffler hot air shroud is vented to the engine compartment when the cabin heat is off? 2006 CTSW.
Tom Baker
It is to allow for airflow around the muffler whether you are using the heater or not. Without the airflow the muffler would get too hot. I think every airplane I have worked on with a shroud over the muffler had a dump for the air, whether it was carb heat or cabin heat. I even know one airplane from the late 30's that had a SB to modify the carb heat system to add a dump. The reason it is vented up instead of down is to probably aid in having warmed air going to the carb heat/alternate air intake for the carburetor. If you think you might have carb ice it might be wise to shut off cabin heat if you have it on.
