Ken
Hi Folks: .I always change my oil but the shop (Rotax Certified) did it since it was in for a few other maintenance items. It was time to change the oil today, and the shop placed the foot in the oil canister upside down. Can this cause any damage to the engine/gearbox? Roger Lee
Depending on the year the tank was made it could seriously reduce oil flow. Later on Rotax cut a notch in the oil tank dip tube that picks up oil just so it couldn't make it damaging. How did you find out they put it in upside down? Ken
I changed the oil today and it wouldn't drain. I always pull the canister. Temps and pressure have been fine. Thoughts?
FlyingMonkey
If you run 100LL there could be some lead sludge in the bottom plugging the drain. How many hours since last oil change? Any issues noted at that time?
Ken
Not much sludge minimal 100 LL used. Changed at about 40 hours. The foot being upside down blocked the oil from flowing out of the drain except at a trickle. My first thought was sludge but that was not the case. I have been running 93 octane ethanol-free and some ethanol 93 as well. Oil pressure is on the low end near 30 at cruise and 70 at start up decreasing as the engine warms. Are those numbers with the foot upside down? Did they come up when the foot was flipped into the correct orientation? I like to see 40+psi generally. Ken
I usually saw 40 to 50 before the errant oil change. The cold may be having some effect.
Anticept
It's normal for the oil to be at a high psi when things are cold. It's viscocity is higher and clearances are smaller.
